Parents And Prayer: Part Three: Prayer And Family Life
The most important thing we do as parents is nurture faith in Jesus in our children. Family prayer demonstrates how important Jesus is in every aspect of our lives, and especially for our salvation, and looks to Jesus to give us all we need. John says about Jesus, “From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.” (John 1:16) So family prayer shows that we don’t take any of the blessings we have from Jesus- God’s love, forgiveness, help in trouble, promise of eternal life, comfort and strength in all our challenges, etc.- for granted. It shows we believe Jesus when he told us how much we need him in John 15:5: “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” It shows cheerful trust in the promise of Philippians 4:19 “…God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

You know God wants you to pray for your children, but what should you pray for them? A better question might be, “What should you NOT pray for when it comes to your children?” Here’s why. God tells us in Ephesians 6:18: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. …Be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” So whatever challenges your children are facing, whatever struggles you are having raising them, whatever happens during any given day that weighs on your mind or heart- pray about it! Entrust your children to their all-powerful, flawlessly wise, and devoted Heavenly Father.

“Parents Rely On Personal Experience Over Biblical Guidance.” That was the headline of a February 27, 2009 article in The Christian Post by Elena Garcia. Garcia cited several studies that confirmed that, although the vast majority of parents said that they are trying to improve their parenting skills, few look to the Bible or church for guidance. 6 of 10 parents completely ignore parenting seminars, and just rely on their own family experiences to guide them. Over half don’t use books that provide faith-based guidance for parents. Only 20% say their receive guidance from a sacred text such as the Bible. Only 15% look to their church for help with parenting. I pray that you are different.
