Our History:

In early 1975, the Michigan District Home Mission Board of the WELS  arranged for a pastor, Richard Hennig of Memorial Lutheran Church in Williamston, to begin exploratory services on the west side of Lansing.  Services were held for the first time on February 2, 1975 at a nearby hotel.  By April of that year, services were conducted at Neff Elementary School in Grand Ledge.  By June, the first pastor of Shepherd of the Hills, Dean Anderson, was called to serve this new congregation.  By July, the congregation was incorporated.

The members purchased property along St. Joseph Highway in December of 1976 and few years later were able to put a modular chapel on the site.  After Pastor Anderson accepted a call to serve another church, Pastor Don Sutton was called to serve Shepherd of the Hills, and was our pastor from 1979- 1985.

In 1983, the congregation built a small multi-use facility that served the congregation’s worship, fellowship, and classroom needs until 1993, when the current facility was built, providing a larger, separate worship space, new offices, conference room, and cry room, and a larger gathering space outside the sanctuary.  Pastor Norman Burger, Jr. has been a pastor at Shepherd of the Hills since 1986.  Pastor Tullberg was installed as pastor on July 17, 2011.

Total communicant membership at the start of our fiscal year (July 2011) was 435 youth and adults the total number of baptized souls, children and adults, totaled 531.  We look forward to God’s grace continuing to provide us with opportunities to serve the people of Lansing with the good news of God’s love in Christ, our Savior.
