This We Believe (A Summary of Lutheran Teachings)

1. We believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

2. We believe that all the canonical books of the Old and New Testament are the inspired, inerrant Word of God, true in every part and God’s divine message for every generation.

3. We believe that God created this world in six days. It was perfect, without corruption or death.

4. We believe that Adam and Eve brought sin into the world by disobeying the Lord’s command. When sin entered the world, it brought all the curses of sin, sickness and pain, sorrow and death, earthly death and eternal death in hell.

5. We believe that God saved us, purely out of his wondrous love, by sending his own Son to fulfill the law perfectly for us and to pay the full price of sin by dying for us.

6. We believe that Jesus Christ, true God and true man, bore all the sins of all the world upon the cross, and that he gives eternal life in the glories of heaven to all who simply trust in him by faith. All who reject him shall spend eternity in the fires of hell.

7. We believe in the power of baptism to create faith and make us members of God’s family. This sacrament was meant for all people, including infants who are sinners in need of Christ’s sacrifice and in whom the Holy Spirit works the miracle of faith as in all of us.

8. We believe in the true presence of Christ’s body and blood in the bread and wine of Holy Communion for the remission of sins.

9. We believe in the gift of God’s indwelling Holy Spirit to bless us with the fruits of faith, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, that we might live as his children and glorify our Father in heaven.

10. We believe that Jesus will return one day to raise all the dead, judge all the world, and glorify all who believe and take them to be with him forever in heaven.
